It doesn't need to be in that 'exact' style, I mean it could be chibis, something even 8-bit would be acceptable. As long as it doesn't look like crap and we can tell who it is, is generally what people would be looking for. In fact, would it be easier to make 8-bit versions of the characters?

Not sure about that though. I mean this community is vocal, but actually 'doing' things? They are few and far between sadly.
