Arthas, the prince of Lordaeron, was an ambitious young man who tried to help his father to fight against the Undeads. Under the guidance of Uther the Light Bringer, he became a royal paladin in the Knights of Silver Hand at the age of 19. From there Arthas encounted Vanguard obtained the power of controlling all the Royal Paladin units to fight the Undeads.
One day in a battle against the Undeads, he encountered an Undead dreadlord named Mal'Ganis. Although Arthas and his army won the battle, Mal'Ganis slipped away and said to Arthas, "If you want to defeat me, come and meet me in Northrland". From that day, Arthas swore he would do all it takes to defeat Mal'Ganis and his Undead army.
A month later, Arthas and his troop arrived Northrland, and he met his former mentor Muradin. He told Arthas that he was searching for a runeblade named Frostmourne. Arthas decided to ask Muradin to join his army to defeat the Undeads while searching for Frostmourne.
Few days later, Arthas and Muradin found the runeblade Frostmourne at the end of a cave. Muradin, reading the inscrpition on the sword, reported that the sword was cursed and plead Arthas to leave this place as soon as possible. Not knowing it was a trap by the Undeads, Arthas insisted on pulling the sword out, thinking it will help him to defeat the Undeads. Although the sword did give him the power to defeat Mal'Ganis, it also stole his soul and transformed him into Death Knight slowly. In the end he decided to discard Royal Paladin in return for the power of Shadow Paladin.
In order to show his loyalty, he killed Muradin, Uther, and even his father with the power of Shadow Paladin to gain more power of hatred. From there, he began his trip on searching for stronger power through cardfighting different people.
