Title: Counter Ruling?
Post by: Dragon_Hunter on June 10, 2016, 02:02:49 PM
My opponent calls Armorknight Asura. I have the Shadow Shade impact monster on my field. I attempt to use Joe's counter immediately AFTER he calls the monster, but before he can use the ability. He says I can't do that, because there's no "counter timing" there. He cited the official detailed rulings page, but when I went to look it up the first step under the detailed steps of a counter was simply "Play timing starts". So, I want to know: when are you allowed to use a counter and when aren't you?

The Earliest you can activate any counter is "1. Flow of a Buddy Call / Call" under 2.1 so his reasoning is wrong.
You CAN activate Joe here. However during this point the card you want to target "Asura" is not on the field yet so he can't be targeted by Joe.

Edit: Made a small mistake with original post. Opponent couldn't do a thing with Asura because Asura is not a counter/cont card. So he actually had no chance to activate Asura. You will kill it at "2. Flow of a Play Timing / [Counter]" under 6.1. If you activate Joe here. Unless he cast a counter which he can still do.

A bit late on this, but TSS is wrong.

The reason you don't get a timing before he can activate Asura's ability is that during a play timing, turn player gets priority, as you can see in "2. Flow of a Play Timing/[Counter]". Even if you use it in response to Asura's ability, Asura's ability does not require Asura to be on the field to resolve.

And as mentioned by TSS, even if you activate a counter during the call process, it is before Asura has entered the field.

Well then. See I got confused for that second half since well for the second half since they referenced Asmodai during the q&a in the same section. But no ability with ACT (Non counter). I wasn't sure if ACT ability could activate then as well. Then I realized there after rechecking a 3rd time the guide after seeing this post, there wasn't any other section for it. So once again another case of classic priority.

Ether way he kills Asura even if they choose to use Asura skill. He just loses Joe or more of Joe's soul in the process.
